18 Dec Meet Dalton, Cybersecurity Analyst
Dalton answers questions and give you some insight on what it is like to work at Criterion as an early career professional. All of our open positions can be found here.
Please describe your job: What do you do?
I am a Cybersecurity Analyst, protecting my customer’s networks through Cyber Network Defense (CND).
What are your favorite tools to help you to get the job done?
Splunk, FireEye, and McAfee EPO. Although all three perform different functions, in my opinion Splunk is by far the best with its ability to set up alerts, graph historical data, and create entire dashboards.
What kind of skills do you need to be effective in your role?
Analytical ability. The knowledge and confidence to determine from a 0-10,000-foot-view, “Is this a real threat?”
What do you like best about your job?
The experience that comes with protecting a national operating environment and putting the skills I have learned to use in determining what a threat to that system is.
What surprised you most about your job after doing it for a few months/year?
The scope of our authority. Our job entails that we keep the network safe, whether you be an intern or at the Senior Executive Service (SES) level.
What advice would you give to someone looking for their first job?
Don’t get overwhelmed, know your worth, and beware of unsolicited advice. Don’t be afraid or upset if you have to start from the bottom; opportunity finds those who are prepared.
Bonus: What was the weirdest job interview question you were ever asked?
What college football team I liked. I danced around the question to avoid stating the interviewer’s rival team, which was my favorite team.
